Malabar River Festival draws to a close
Ms Shikha Chauhan, a Madhya Pradesh native, has been chosen “Rapid Rani” and Mr Amit Thapa of Uttarakhand crowned “Rapid Raja” as the eighth edition of the Malabar River Festival drew to a close at Pulikkayam near Kodenchery in Kozhikode district.
Ms Chauhan won the first prize in the Down River competition in the Iruvazhinji river, and two other prizes, propelling her to the top position. Mr Thapa won two first prizes in the Down River competition and the Slalom competition. He also won the third prize in the Pro Slalom competition. Meanwhile, Ms Saniya Batham and Ms Anne Mathias won the Extreme Slalom (Intermediate) competition.
The Forests Minister Mr A. K. Saseendran pointed out that the fest would boost the tourism potential of the area without polluting the environment. The Tourism Minister Mr P. A. Mohamed Riyas said the Malabar River Fest has emerged as a signature event in the country, taking advantage of the rapidly growing adventure tourism sector.
The festival, that extended from August 12 to 14, was organized by the Tourism Department, the Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society, Kozhikode district panchayat, District Tourism Promotion Council and the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association.
