Marine Drive Walkway renovated
A popular destination for Kochiites and visitors to Ernakulam district, Marine Drive walkway has undergone renovation. Uneven tiles were replaced, a gym for visitors, a play area for children and LED lights are among the new additions to the renovated walkway.
Industries Minister Mr P. Rajeeve inaugurated the 2.4-km-long Marine Drive walkway, which was renovated by Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML) at a cost of ?7.30 crore. The minister said the walkway was in keeping with people’s aspirations for such open spaces.
The walkway has a kids’ play area, an open gymnasium, 120 granite seats and 201 new LED lights. The number of garbage bins will be increased and a CCTV network to has been envisaged.
As part of the inauguration, a musical evening led by musician K.M. Udayan was organized. Plans are underway to convert the walkway into a hub for cultural events. Tourists can enjoy the cultural events amid the beauty of the Kochi backwaters.
The walkway has tactile tiles to guide the visually challenged, while steps will be taken to make the place differently abled-friendly.
Stretching from High Court Junction to Rajendra Maidan, the Marine Drive walkway, also known as Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam Marg, is a buzzing tourist spot in Kochi. With fascinating views of the setting and rising sun over the horizon, gentle, cool breeze from the Vembanad Lake and a host of eateries serving a multitude of delicacies, Marine Drive is sure to bestow some fulfilling and refreshing moments at any part of the day.
