Book on Kerala Tourism by Minister Riyas Released at Sharjah Fair
Tourism Minister Mr P.A. Mohamed Riyas released his book on Kerala tourism at the 2023 Sharjah International Book Fair. Titled 'Kerala Tourism: Charithravum Varthamanavum,' this Malayalam work offers a comprehensive account of the history of tourism in 'God’s Own Country' and the recent initiatives taken to revive it as a foundational sector.
The minister’s book was formally launched by the chief guest, Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Jamal Alqasimi, a member of the Sharjah ruling family. He handed over the first copy of the book to Kerala Muslim Youth League president Sayyid Munavvar Ali Shihab Thangal. The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice Chairman Mr Waleed Bukathir, the Mathrubhumi Managing Director Mr M.V. Shreyams Kumar and the Deputy Editor Mr P.P. Sasindran and Member, Loka Kerala Sabha Mr V. T. Salim, were the other dignitaries present at the ceremony.
The book recounts the minister’s administrative experience in the past two-and-a-half years. “When we assumed power in May 2021, our key focus was to rein in COVID-19. We have emerged from that crisis,” he said at the launch of Charithravum Varthamanavum (Kerala Tourism: History and Present Times). Mr Riyas pointed out that the New York Times listed Kerala among the world’s 52 must-visit places in 2023.
The 168-page work speaks about the various ways in which Kerala utilised its tourism potential. With a foreword penned by legendary actor Mr Mohanlal, Charithravum Varthamanavum by Mathrubhumi Books delves into the history and contemporary facets of Kerala's tourism, offering a comprehensive perspective.
It emphasises the priority given by the state to Responsible Tourism, which promotes environmentally friendly progress, and creates avenues for local community involvement.
The book also illustrates Kerala's Tourism Marketing framework and pioneering initiatives, such as the Destination Challenge, which involves the active participation of local organisations.
Its chapters delve into the state’s women-centric destinations, new introductions to Responsible Tourism and adventure packages, the state’s innovative Design Policy and the recent targeted efforts to promote travel in upstate Malabar.
Actor Mr Mohanlal, in his foreword, writes that Charithravum Varthamanavum “contains compelling observations on how to develop the endless tourism potential without harming the state”.
