Kerala Breaks Record, Sees a Surge in Domestic Tourist Arrivals

Setting a remarkable record in 2023, Kerala attracted 2,18,71,641 visitors from within the country, a significant 15.92 per cent increase as compared to the previous year, noted the Minister for Tourism and Public Works Mr P. A. Mohamed Riyas. This has further cemented Kerala’s position as one of the most sought-after destinations for tourists in India.

The minister's announcement revealed that Kerala recorded a notable increase in domestic tourist arrivals in 2022, with 1,88,67,414 visitors-a significant 18.97% rise compared to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

In 2023, Ernakulam district attracted the highest number of domestic tourists with 44,87,930 visitors, followed by Idukki (36,33,584), Thiruvananthapuram (35,89,932), Thrissur (24,78,573) and Wayanad (17,50,267). Moreover, Kerala witnessed a substantial rise in international tourist arrivals, reaching 6,49,057 in 2023 - a remarkable surge of 87.83% compared to the previous year. Ernakulam district also emerged as the top destination for international tourists with 2,79,904 visitors, followed by Thiruvananthapuram (1,48,462), Idukki (1,03,644), Alappuzha (31,403) and Kottayam (28,458).

"Kerala Tourism's relentless efforts, backed by carefully devised policy measures and meticulously executed promotional campaigns both domestically and internationally, have led to this historic achievement," stated Mr Riyas.

While acknowledging the lingering impact of the pandemic on foreign tourism, the minister expressed optimism about the gradual recovery. "Geopolitical tensions elsewhere can also impact international travel patterns. Despite these hurdles, Kerala has made notable progress in attracting foreign visitors," he stated. "We anticipate that upcoming adventure tourism ventures and targeted initiatives in the Malabar region will contribute significantly to our success."

The minister also revealed plans for increased oversight to ensure the safety of adventure tourism activities. This involves making registration and licensing mandatory for surfing training clubs and similar ventures, facilitated by the adoption of a regulatory framework.

Also, Tourism Director Mr P. B. Nooh highlighted that Kerala has distinguished itself by remaining a year-round experiential tourism destination, achieved through addition of new destinations, heightened emphasis on adventure tourism, and introduction of innovative strategies to bolster the sector.
