Kerala is a Futuristic Tourism Destination: Shri Riyas Tourism Minister Interacts with Visiting Cuba
Kerala is emerging as a futuristic tourism destination by implementing innovative initiatives and aligning with emerging trends, attracting visitors from around the world, according to Tourism Minister Shri P. A. Mohamed Riyas. Speaking during an interaction with Mr Abel Despaigne, Charge d’ Affaires from the Cuban Embassy, Shri Riyas highlighted Kerala's distinctive attractions such as verdant coastal areas, picturesque backwaters and misty high ranges, which make it a top choice for tourists.
Shri Riyas emphasized that Kerala's ability to offer year-round tourism is a key feature that sets it apart. He credited initiatives like the Responsible Tourism (RT) project, experiential tourism concepts and sustainable practices for significantly boosting tourist arrivals. Additionally, Shri Riyas detailed other major attractions in Kerala, including Ayurveda wellness tourism, Caravan Kerala, and adventure tourism, which have contributed to a substantial increase in visitors from both other states and abroad.
Mr Despaigne, on a nine-day visit to Kerala, expressed Cuba's strong interest in fostering mutual co-operation in the tourism sector with Kerala. He highlighted the historical significance of the political and cultural exchanges between Kerala and Cuba, and suggested that this co-operation should extend to other sectors as well. In his presentation on Cuban tourism, Mr Despaigne drew parallels between Kerala and Cuba, noting that both regions focus their tourism activities on coastal landscapes.
The Tourism Secretary Shri K. Biju, who presided over the meeting, mentioned that the possibilities of collaboration with Cuba in the tourism sector will be explored, as Kerala is keen to associate with the island nation in North America. The Tourism Director Smt. Sikha Surendran, in her presentation, underscored Kerala's emphasis on experiential tourism through innovative modules like agri-tourism and RT, which are driving the state's tourism activities forward.
The meeting concluded with Tourism Additional Director (General) Shri Vishnuraj P. proposing a vote of thanks, reinforcing the optimism for future collaborations and the continued growth of Kerala's tourism sector. This engagement between Kerala and Cuba not only highlights the potential for mutual growth in tourism but also underscores Kerala's commitment to evolving as a global tourism destination through sustainable and experiential approaches.
