Malabar River Festival to Promote Kerala as an Adventure Tourism Hub: Minister
The Malabar River Festival, set to take place from July 25 to 28, is poised to elevate Kerala’s status as a premier destination for adventure tourism. According to Minister Shri P. A. Mohamed Riyas, this event is designed to draw international attention to Kerala's potential for adventure sports, particularly white-water kayaking. The festival will be held in Thusharagiri, Chalipuzha and Iruvarinjipuzha, offering a platform for both local enthusiasts and professional kayakers to showcase their skills.
Organized by the Adventure Tourism Promotion Society (ATPS), District Tourism Promotion Council and Kozhikode District Panchayat, with technical assistance from the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association, the festival is expected to significantly boost tourism in the Malabar region. The minister Shri Riyas highlighted the festival's capacity to enhance the region’s tourism footfalls, and establish Kerala as a key player in adventure tourism.
The Malabar River Festival will feature competitions aimed at encouraging local participation alongside international professionals. The event is expected to attract kayakers from over 20 countries and more than 100 professionals from within India. Pre-event programmes such as mountain bike water rallies, water polo, swimming competitions at state and national levels, fishing-bait contests, rugby and off-road rallies are also planned.
In a recent virtual meeting, the minister Shri Riyas reiterated the state government’s commitment to developing world-class infrastructure to support adventure and eco-tourism. Participants in the meeting included key figures such as Thiruvambady MLA Shri Linto Joseph, Kerala Tourism Secretary Shri K. Biju and ATPS Chief Executive Officer Shri Binu Kuriakose, along with presidents of eight panchayats and other local officials.
This initiative aligns with Kerala's broader strategy to attract thrill-seekers and adventure lovers, further positioning the state as a global adventure tourism hub. The Malabar River Festival not only aims to promote white-water kayaking across peninsular India but also to bring substantial tourist appeal and economic benefits to the region.
