Responsible Tourism in Celebrating Environment Day
The Responsible Tourism Mission Society celebrated World Environment Day on 05 June 2024 by organizing various women-friendly tourism projects and environmental protection programmes across Kerala. The main theme of the campaign was 'No more plastic in travel,' emphasizing the reduction of plastic usage in tourism.
Several women-friendly tourism companies announced their commitment to eliminating plastic products, particularly plastic bottles, from their trips. Dream Acres Farm, a women-friendly unit of the Kozhikode RT Mission Society, planted tree saplings at various locations, and decided that Dream Acres Homestay and Mud House will no longer provide plastic bottles and plastic covers to guests, opting instead for natural products.
Other companies joined this initiative, including Chitrasalabham Tour Company in Wayanad, Grass Root Journeys in Kottayam and Green Acres Farm Stay in Kozhikode, all committing themselves to a plastic-free operation. 'Let's Go for a Camp' also announced that they would no longer serve plastic bottles, using refillable bottles instead. Additionally, Earthen Pool Villa in Kanthallur, Idukki, and Tripayo Tour Company in Kozhikode made similar plastic-free declarations. The women-friendly tourism company 'Escape Now' also pledged to avoid single-use plastic products.
In Thrissur district, campaigns promoting the use of menstrual cups instead of sanitary pads were conducted at Athirapally. A major campaign focused on providing shade for travellers in Ponnani, Malappuram district.
In Kottayam district, fruit tree saplings were planted at various locations along the Kavanattinkara in co-operation with the Grama Panchayat. Similar programmes were organized in Kasaragod, Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki districts.
Shri Rupesh Kumar K., CEO of the Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission Society, emphasized that environmental protection and tourism are complementary sectors. He praised the efforts of the RT Mission Units, Resource Persons, and Grama Panchayats for their active participation and successful implementation of the programmes, contributing to a sustainable and eco-friendly tourism model in Kerala.
