Kerala is poised to become a pioneer in literary tourism with the introduction of India’s first-ever Literary Tourism Circuit. Conceptualized and developed by Kerala Tourism, the initiative offers a unique cultural journey through the landscapes that shaped the minds and works of some of Malayalam literature’s greatest icons. The circuit, currently nearing completion, is expected to be launched by mid-2025.
Focusing on the culturally rich Malabar region, the Literary Tourism Circuit will connect prominent sites across Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad. These locations are not only birthplaces and residences of celebrated writers but also serve as enduring repositories of Kerala’s literary history. Kozhikode’s status as a UNESCO City of Literature further enhances the significance of this project.
Key destinations in the circuit include the Thunchathu Ezhuthachan Museum in Tirur, honouring the father of Malayalam literature, and memorials of literary giants such as S.K. Pottekkatt, Akitham Achuthan Namboodiri, and the recently deceased Jnanpith awardee M.T. Vasudevan Nair. The circuit also features the Vaikom Muhammad Basheer Memorial in Beypore, renowned as the home of the beloved “Beypore Sultan,” and the O.V. Vijayan Memorial in Thasarak village, Palakkad, which showcases rare manuscripts, cartoons, and personal belongings.
This initiative promises to enrich the tourism landscape by offering visitors immersive experiences steeped in cultural and literary history. It is also expected to contribute to heritage preservation and the promotion of Malayalam literature on a global platform.
The circuit complements existing literary initiatives like the Kerala Literature Festival (KLF) and is expected to draw a diverse audience of book lovers, academics, students, and cultural explorers from India and abroad. As global interest in literary tourism grows, Kerala’s Literary Tourism Circuit will stand as a testament to the timeless power of the written word.
