The 'Gateway to Malabar Tourism B2B Conference,' organized by Kerala Tourism, has set the stage for transformative growth in the tourism sector, positioning Malabar as a frontrunner in South India’s travel landscape. The event served as a vital platform to explore the region’s vast potential, projected to rival Karnataka’s tourism industry while complementing the well-established central and southern regions of Kerala.
Kerala Tourism Minister Shri P. A. Mohammed Riyas inaugurated the event, underlining the significance of infrastructure development in boosting tourism. The upcoming completion of the six-lane national highway between Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram by December 2024 was highlighted as a game-changer. The highway will seamlessly connect the hilly terrains of the east with the coastal stretches of the west, offering tourists an efficient and scenic travel experience. Minister Riyas also shared plans for rest facilities at 50 km intervals along the coastal road to ensure traveller comfort.
He credited the surge in Malabar’s tourism to government initiatives like opening rest houses to the public, attracting both domestic and international tourists. Notably, private investment has been instrumental in this growth, with instances like Kasaragod district now hosting two five-star hotels and Wayanad emerging as one of Kerala’s top tourism revenue generators. The region’s ability to attract weekend tourists from nearby metros like Bengaluru has further fuelled its ascent as a major destination.
The conference delved into strategies for capitalizing on Malabar’s unique offerings. These include its traditional festivals such as Theyyam, culinary diversity, eco-tourism destinations, and ritual-art traditions. Discussions emphasized the integration of technology with traditional practices, promoting eco-friendly accommodations, interactive cultural experiences, and targeted digital marketing campaigns. By leveraging these initiatives, the stakeholders aim to position Malabar as a global tourism destination.
Kozhikode District Collector Shri Snehil Kumar Singh IAS drew attention to the unmatched diversity of Kerala’s tourism offerings, stating that its uniqueness cannot be compared even with popular destinations like Goa. Kerala Tourism Director Smt Sikha Surendran IAS highlighted plans to develop Malabar as a hub for experiential tourism, combining adventure, wellness, and heritage experiences. The region’s potential lies in its ability to offer immersive journeys that cater to cultural enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure seekers alike.
The event also marked a continuation of the government’s commitment to public-private partnerships. Shri Riyas credited the success of the Tourism Investors Meet 2023 as a key driver of innovation and growth in the sector. Stakeholders at the conference included industry leaders, government officials, and representatives from the hospitality and travel sectors. Their collective vision is to shape Malabar into a tourism powerhouse, blending cultural authenticity with sustainable development and innovative strategies.
With significant investments in infrastructure and tourism facilities, along with collaborative efforts from stakeholders, Malabar is poised to emerge as a shining star in India’s tourism sector. The region’s ability to offer diverse experiences—from pristine beaches and lush forests to traditional art forms and luxury stays—promises a bright future for the northern region of Kerala.
