A state-level workshop and leadership meet for Tourism Clubs was organised by the Department of Tourism at the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), Thiruvananthapuram. The initiative reaffirmed Kerala’s commitment to empowering youth to play a pivotal role in the development and promotion of tourism across the state.
The event brought together students, tourism professionals, and officials, with discussions focused on leveraging the reach and creativity of campus-based Tourism Clubs for identifying unexplored destinations, promoting them on digital platforms, and cultivating responsible tourism practices.
With over 500 Tourism Clubs active in campuses across Kerala, their impact has been notable in strengthening awareness about the state’s tourism offerings. It was emphasised that these clubs, while acting as grassroots ambassadors, should also be entrusted with the responsibility of creating digital narratives-through short videos, social media reels, and other digital content-that spotlight lesser-known destinations and unique local experiences.
A state-level competition will soon be launched for Tourism Club members to produce creative video content showcasing new locations, with a goal of enhancing digital visibility and discovery. In parallel, plans are underway to develop a comprehensive map highlighting high-range tourism activities such as trekking and hiking, aligning with the growing demand for adventure tourism in Kerala.
Environmental responsibility was also a central theme, with students being reminded of their role in ensuring the upkeep and hygiene of tourist locations. In this regard, a mass cleaning drive has been scheduled across tourism destinations in the state, further fostering a sense of ownership and civic responsibility among youth participants.
Sessions at the workshop included expert insights on entrepreneurship and innovation in tourism. Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) encouraged club members to identify new tourism opportunities and seek support for turning them into viable business ventures. Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission Society, through its session, introduced students to the principles and practices of responsible tourism and its potential as a sustainable career path.
Tourism Clubs continue to emerge as a unique platform for youth engagement, blending creativity, community participation, and cultural pride. This workshop served as a catalyst for empowering students to contribute meaningfully to Kerala’s evolving tourism landscape.
