Kerala's first-ever 'WE Park', an innovative initiative under the state government’s new design policy, was inaugurated by Shri. P. A. Mohamed Riyas, Minister, Kerala Tourism, in Kollam on March 1. The park, located beneath the railway bridge near SN College, represents a significant step in transforming unused urban spaces into dynamic community hubs.

Developed at a cost of Rs 2 crore over an area of 70 cents, WE Park features extensive recreational amenities, including a shuttle court, volleyball court, skating area, chess block, open gym, garden, ample seating arrangements, parking facilities, essential services, and kiosks. The park aims to enhance urban aesthetics while promoting active community participation.

In his inaugural address, Minister Riyas highlighted the vision behind WE Park, emphasizing its role in a design-driven economy. "The WE Park reflects our commitment to converting abandoned or neglected public spaces into engaging, productive areas. This approach will significantly uplift our urban experience and enrich Kerala's tourism offerings," said Shri Mohamed Riyas.

Finance Minister Shri K. N. Balagopal, Minister for Animal Husbandry & Dairy Development Smt. J. Chinchu Rani, Kollam MP Shri N. K. Premachandran, and Kollam Corporation Mayor Smt. Honey Benjamin attended as chief guests, while Shri M. Noushad MLA presided over the function.

Minister Riyas also stressed the broader implications of the project, noting that the design policy set forth by the Tourism and PWD departments would continue to reclaim and transform more urban spaces statewide. These initiatives promise to deliver significant improvements to Kerala’s public areas, enhancing overall tourist experiences.

Other dignitaries present included Vishnu Raj, Additional Director (General) of the Tourism Department, and Shri S. K. Sajesh, Chairman of Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Ltd.
