Anakkara, which lies between Munnar and Thekkady, is a small hamlet in Idukki that has recently entered the international tourism map. The view of cascading waterfalls and the villages in Tamil Nadu from Kambam to Theni are the highlights of Anakkara.
The village is being developed as a Spice Tourism Circuit (STC) station under the Endogenous Rural Tourism Project sponsored jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Government of India. As part of the project, tree houses for tourists have been erected and new sanitation facilities provided.
Under the project, the tourists can avail the services of tourist guides. There is also an information centre at Anakkara for tourists. Home-stay facilities have also been arranged. The spice shops here offer you a variety of spices of tantalizing aroma and freshness. Local handicraft items created by traditional artists and by members of the tribal community are also up for sale in some shops. The project also envisages the proper training of the local artistes of folk arts so that they are able to perform before tourists, on request.
