The Dream Destination

Lake Palace

Lake Palace, a Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Enterprise, is a resort that offers a great combination of luxury, a charming, old-world ambience and an opportunity to enjoy Nature at close quarters. No wonder that the resort, situated on a small promontory protruding into the lake in the midst of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, is frequented by visitors in all seasons.

History
The Lake Palace used to be the summer retreat of the erstwhile Travancore kings. During hunting expeditions in the Periyar Valley, the palace was their chosen stop for rest and refreshment. The palace was also used by top British officials like viceroys and governor- generals during their visits.

Ambience and facilities
Accessible only by boat, the Lake Palace is only a 20-minute boat ride from the boat jetty. Only the chirping of birds and a cry or call from the denizens of the forest disturb the silence here. The palace is surrounded by thick trees and lawns on all sides except the entrance from the lake.

The exterior of the building is built in the traditional style with its characteristic long, open corridors. Inside, the Lake Palace is a mixture of ethnic Indian and Western. The rooms have antique interiors, but offer modern facilities. Many of the wooden beds in the luxurious rooms often have carvings on them.

The windows of all the rooms provide fantastic views of the lake as well as the jungle beyond. Deer, herds of elephants and wild buffaloes can usually be sighted from the hotel rooms. Sometimes, wild boar stray into the premises of the resort in the evenings.

The Lake Palace offers traditional Kerala dishes, Indian delicacies as well as continental fare. There is also an Ayurvedic centre, a doctor on call, recreational opportunities and currency exchange facilities.
