Vallakkadavu, about six km from Vandiperiyar, on the Thekkady-Kottayam route, is a destination frequented by many who visit Thekkady and Kumily. Like other tourist spots near a forest area, Vallakkadavu is green and surrounded by thick greenery. It offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests. River Periyar flows through the area, nourishing it and adding to its charm.
The Forest Department has set up a jungle camp here and the location of the campsite beside River Periyar guarantees a great experience. Forest officials and guides accompany tourists to the campsite. A night on this campsite is a night to remember. One thing you should not miss out while at the camp is a drive along the roads of Vallakkadavu just after dawn.
At Vallakkadavu, you stand a good chance of spotting elephants, Sambar deer and - if you’re very lucky - leopards too. The variety of flora and fauna in the region brings many research scholars to Vallakkadavu. The Indian Hornbill, the Racket-tailed Drongo, the Indian Tree Pies etc are present in the forests of Vallakkadavu.
Another attraction of the place is its tribal settlement.
