Alpashi Utsavam
The Alpashi Utsavam, a grand traditional festival held at the iconic Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram, is one of the most awaited events for devotees and visitors alike. Known not only for its famed hidden treasures and architectural brilliance, the temple is also the epicentre of several historic festivals. The Alpashi Utsavam, which typically occurs in October or November, stands out as a vibrant and significant occasion.
The main highlight of the festival is the Aarattu ceremony, a sacred ritual where the temple deities are taken for a ceremonial bath in the sea at Shanghumugham beach. The grand procession that leads up to the holy bath is an awe-inspiring sight. The head of the Travancore royal family leads the procession, holding a sword, symbolizing the royal connection to the temple's rituals.
Caparisoned elephants, mounted police and armed guards add to the grandeur, while thousands of devotees line the streets, eager to witness this historic and deeply spiritual event. The procession, which starts from the temple, is a blend of faith, tradition and pageantry, captivating all who partake in the festivities.
The Alpashi Utsavam offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness the rich cultural and religious heritage of Kerala, especially the deep ties between the Travancore royal family and the revered Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple.
