Attuvela Mahotsavam: A Mesmerizing Water Carnival
Attuvela Mahotsavam, celebrated annually at the Elankavu Bhagavathy Temple in Kottayam, Kerala, is a unique water carnival steeped in legend and cultural splendour. This two-day festival represents a grand welcome ceremony for the Goddess of Kodungalloor, who is believed to visit her sister, the Goddess of Elankavu. The presiding deity of the temple is Goddess Bhagavathy, and the event is conducted with great pomp and pageantry, drawing visitors from far and wide.
The highlight of the festival is a breathtaking procession where a beautifully-illuminated and vibrantly-decorated replica of the temple sails across the waters of the Muvattupuzha River. This enchanting procession begins at Attuvela Kadavu, located 2 kilometres from the temple, and features a fleet of small, brightly-adorned canoes accompanied by the resonating beats of traditional temple percussion. The spectacle of shimmering lights reflecting off the river, combined with the rhythm of the music, creates a magical and unforgettable experience for onlookers.
Attuvela Mahotsavam is not only a visual treat but also a celebration of Kerala's rich traditions and communal harmony. The blend of illuminated artistry, traditional music and the serene waterway makes this festival a must-see event for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the cultural beauty of Kerala.
