Kadalundi River and Vallikkunnu Reserve
Kadalundi is a picturesque coastal village situated in Kerala, lying close to the shores of the Arabian Sea. Flowing gracefully through Malappuram district, the Kadalundi River originates in the lush Western Ghats near the Silent Valley and stretches 110 kilometres to meet the Arabian Sea. Fed by the tributaries Olipuzha and Veliyar, this rain-fed river is not just a lifeline for the region but also a gateway to stunning natural beauty and rich biodiversity.
One of the river’s jewels is the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, located just 19 kilometres from Kozhikode. Spread across a cluster of scenic islands surrounded by rolling hillocks, the sanctuary is a paradise for bird lovers. It is home to over 100 species of native birds and more than 60 migratory species, making it an ideal spot for Nature enthusiasts, especially during the migration season from November to March. Watching birds soar against the backdrop of a vibrant sunset is a mesmerizing experience.
Adding to the charm is the Kadalundi-Vallikkunnu Community Reserve, India’s first riverfront community reserve. Covering 153 hectares, this unique initiative is managed jointly by the Kerala Forest Department and the local community to protect the river and its surroundings while promoting sustainable tourism. Visitors can enjoy serene boat rides through mangrove-lined waterways, observe diverse wildlife like otters, crabs and mussels, and interact with local fishermen and islanders going about their daily lives. The reserve offers a fascinating glimpse into the delicate balance of Nature and community.
The reserve is thoughtfully equipped with facilities like a boat jetty, restrooms, waiting sheds and parking spaces. Plans are underway to develop cozy homestays for eco-conscious travellers. Visitors can also indulge in local cuisines served at nearby eateries, adding a gustatory delight to their journey. The area’s rich history, dating back to 1st-century CE Greek trade routes, adds another layer of intrigue.
The Kadalundi-Vallikkunnu Community Reserve is a shining example of how conservation and tourism can coexist. Managed by local residents, this project not only preserves the ecosystem but also provides sustainable livelihoods. Whether you’re boating through the mangroves, attending a Nature camp or simply enjoying the tranquil beauty of the river, Kadalundi offers an unforgettable experience where Nature and heritage come alive.
