Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
Tucked away in the green embrace of the Western Ghats, the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad is a sanctuary of unparalleled natural beauty and biodiversity. Spread across approximately 345 square kilometres, this verdant haven invites nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers to immerse themselves in its untouched wilderness. As part of Kerala’s commitment to conservation, Tholpetty stands as a testament to harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
This sanctuary is a living paradise, home to a myriad of flora and fauna. The highlight for many visitors is the majestic Indian elephant, which can often be seen moving gracefully through the dense foliage or bathing playfully in the Kabini River. Other residents include leopards, tigers, bison, gaurs, sambar deer, langurs, Malabar giant squirrels, and reptiles like the King Cobra and monitor lizards. The skies are no less vibrant, with over 200 species of birds creating a symphony of calls, while butterflies, frogs, and other amphibians add to the sanctuary’s thriving ecosystem.
The sanctuary’s flora is equally diverse, dominated by dense tropical rainforests filled with teak, rosewood, mahogany, and eucalyptus trees. The lush greenery and colourful blossoms not only enchant visitors but also provide critical habitats for the sanctuary's diverse wildlife.
Exploring Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is an adventure in itself, with safari options that cater to every type of explorer. A jeep safari through the sanctuary's rugged trails offers an exhilarating journey into its wild heart. Accompanied by trained guides, visitors can witness the mesmerizing interplay of wildlife and nature.
