The only shrine in Kerala that is dedicated to Lord Vamana, Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple in Ernakulam district is considered to be the focus point of Onam celebrations in the state. One of the 108 Vishnu temples mentioned in the works of Alvars (saints), the temple is located on the spot from where King Mahabali is said to have been sent to the netherworld by Lord Vamana. A special Onasadya, ‘Charthu’ (decking up of the God), cultural performances and processions called Pakalpooram and Seeveli are the main celebrations of the 10-day annual Onam festival.
