Thumbi Thullal
A dance in which only women participate, Thumbi Thullal is usually performed in connection with the Onam festival. Sitting round in a circle, women sing in chorus to the rhythmic clapping of hands and occasional ululations known as Kuravai. At their centre sits the main performer. The rhythm and clapping rise to feverish heights when the woman in the centre enters into a trance, and begins to dance.
