Trekking at Periyar Tiger Reserve: A Journey Through Kerala’s Wild Heart

The Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Thekkady, Kerala, stands as one of India’s most-visited and best-managed protected areas. In 2022, it earned the title of the Best Managed Tiger Reserve among 54 tiger reserves in the country, based on the Management Effectiveness Assessment conducted by the National Tiger Conservation Authority. The reserve offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience Nature up close, especially for trekking enthusiasts.

Periyar Tiger Reserve is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, including the majestic Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus), Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris), Sambar Deer (Cervus unicolor), Gaur (Bos gaurus), Leopard (Prionailurus bengalensis) and the elusive Indian Wild Dog (Cuon alpinus). Other residents include Barking Deer (Muntiacus muntjak), Mouse Deer (Tragulus meminna), and the Monitor Lizard (Varanus bengalensis), along with a variety of birds and reptiles. The reserve is also notable for its rich endemism, with three unique species of flora and seven species of fish.

Situated within the stunning southern Western Ghats, Periyar Tiger Reserve spans the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala. The region’s breathtaking landscape includes moist deciduous and evergreen forests, marshy grasslands and an array of interspersed habitats that make it a perfect trekking destination.

The Nature Walk is one of the most popular trekking trails at Periyar Tiger Reserve. It provides an excellent opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of the reserve while traversing various habitats such as moist deciduous forests, evergreen forests and marshy grasslands. During this guided trek, visitors can spot birds, butterflies and possibly even larger wildlife like elephants or tigers.

The trek covers a distance of 4-5 km and lasts for about two-and-a-half hours, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of the reserve. The walk offers a rare opportunity to experience the many wonders of Nature in a serene, undisturbed environment.
