Believed to have originated in Nettur, a sleepy hamlet in North Malabar of Kerala and ‘Petti’ meaning ‘Box’ in Malayalam, the Nettur Petti gets its name so. Also called Malabar box and Amada petti it is a traditional jewellery box believed to bring in prosperity and good luck if kept at home. These handcrafted boxes have been passed down in royal families for generations, and today, they are considered integral parts of major ceremonies in all communities. These boxes were also used in temples to store the jewels of the deity. They are made according to the principles of Thachushastram, Kerala’s ancient architectural science. The unique pyramid tops and ornamention of the boxes are inspired by the temple architecture, traditional art and murals of Kerala. Customarily made of rosewood, these glossy boxes are also made of teak, mahogany and jackfruit wood. Every part of the box is handmade, from the lock to the nails and is painted with different colors like Orange, Red, and Green.These rich earthy colours are set off splendidly by the extravagant embellishments, making it an ideal gift, personifying elegance and luxury. Now synonymous with the State culture, they represent the very spirit and ingenuity of Kerala and its craftsman.
