The historical tale of Lord Ayyappa's friendship with Vavar Swami exemplifies the religious harmony that Sabarimala represents. Pilgrims on the traditional route to Sabarimala ascend the mountain only after visiting Erumeli and offering prayers at the Vavar Mosque. According to legend, Vavar was a devoted friend of Lord Ayyappa. Vavar is mentioned in Ayyappa's songs as a warrior who fought and lost to Ayyappa multiple times before becoming his close companion.
These songs recount how Ayyappa, arriving on an elephant, confronted Vavar, who was on horseback, and eventually helped him in his trade, solidifying their friendship. Vavar is referred in Sasthampattu and Bhuthanatha Upakhyana. It is believed that Vavar, like Kadutha Swami, later became a devout follower of Ayyappa.
A mosque was built for Vavar in Erumeli. The Petta thullal procession of Ayyappa devotees starts from Erumeli Kochambalam, moves to Vavar Nada, and after paying respects to Vavar, enters the forest route to Sabarimala and crosses Karimala.
There is also a special religious place for Vavar at Sabarimala. It is believed that the priest of Vavar's shrine is a descendant of Vavar Swami's family, symbolizing the religious harmony that has existed in Sabarimala for centuries.
