History of Kozhikode

Kozhikode is the second-largest urban city in the State of Kerala. Kozhikode is sometimes known by its anglicised version of name, Calicut. The word calico, a fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth that was exported from the port of Kozhikode, is thought to have been derived from Calicut.

Kozhikode was the capital of an independent kingdom ruled by the samoothiris (Zamorins) in the Middle Ages and later under British rule. Arab merchants traded with the region as early as 7th century. Several travellers like Ibn Battuta (1342–1347), Ma Huan (1403 AD), Abdur Razzak (1442–43) and Niccolò de' Conti (1445) visited this port city. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at Kozhikode on 20 May 1498, thus opening a trade route between Europe and Malabar.

Kozhikode, city of spices

Kozhikode is a scenic, multi-ethnic and multi-religious place with the charm of classic antiquity and old streets. It is also a developed metropolitan city in Kerala with top educational institutions, literature groups, IT hubs, high-end shopping centres and multi-speciality hospitals.

Endowed with lush green countrysides, serene beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, and neaby wayanad hills, this city enchants both its inhabitants and its guests. With its unique culture and friendly ambiance, this is an untouched destination for a good vacation.
