Onavillu
Onavillu is a ceremonial bow deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual fabric of Kerala. Offered to the deity at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram during the Thiruvonam festival, this handcrafted bow is a striking symbol of devotion and artistic excellence.
Each Onavillu is made from yellow kadam or mahogany wood, their surfaces painted in vibrant natural hues—white, green, red, yellow, and black. The final touch of red tassels enhances their visual appeal. The bows feature intricate depictions of Lord Vishnu's incarnations, including Ananthasayanam, Dashavatharam, Sree Krishna Leela, and Sree Rama Pattabhishekam. Bows dedicated to Lord Sastha and Lord Ganesha are also crafted, making each piece a unique tribute to divinity.
The origins of Onavillu trace back to mythology. It is said that King Mahabali, whose annual homecoming is celebrated as Onam, asked Lord Vishnu to reveal all His incarnations. Lord Vishnu, in response, summoned Vishwakarma to create the first Onavillu, featuring paintings of His avatars. Since then, this offering has become an integral part of Kerala’s Onam celebrations, symbolizing divine grace and the bond between Mahabali and his people.
Crafting an Onavillu is no ordinary task. It requires 41 days of intense dedication and spiritual discipline. The artisans follow strict rituals throughout the process, ensuring every detail aligns with tradition. On the day of dedication, 12 bows are ceremoniously presented to various deities within the temple. This ritual, conducted at dawn, is a grand affair filled with reverence and devotion.
More than just a religious offering, Onavillu embodies the essence of Kerala’s cultural heritage. It is a testament to the harmony of artistry, tradition, and devotion, drawing countless pilgrims and admirers of fine craftsmanship to witness this timeless legacy.
