Fibre Crafts
Kerala is rich in biodiversity, and its abundant plant life and natural fibres are integral to the state's handicrafts. Kerala’s fibre craftsmen are renowned for their diverse range of fibre products. Historically, this craft was a traditional vocation for certain communities, but over time, many artisans have attracted to art practices, by designing and producing a wide array of products.
Whether it's feathered mats, purses, bags, bangles, wall hangings, or dress pieces, the skill and creativity of Kerala's artisans shine through in every piece. These products, emerging from God’s Own Country, have grown increasingly popular over the years. The fibres used for these crafts are commonly sourced from banana stems and pineapple leaves. These materials are dried and carefully processed into thin fibres, which are then used to create various artifacts and utensils such as wallets, bags, and decorative pieces.
The demand for these handcrafted items is high in handicraft shops, shopping centers, handicraft exhibitions, and tourist spots. The meticulous finishing and careful decoration of these products make them attractive and eye-catching. The artistry and craftsmanship involved in creating these fibre crafts highlight Kerala's rich cultural heritage and its commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices.
