More than just a utility item, the Nettur Petti – the ethnic jewelry box of Kerala is a signature piece of the region’s traditional crafts. The artefact symbolises wealth and prosperity, and it was once cherished by aristocrats and influential families in Kerala. Also known as the ‘Aamadapetti,’ is unique in its designs and ornamentation, reflecting the skill of traditional artisans. It is believed that the design and craft of this jewelry box originated in Malabar during the rule of the Kolathiris dynasty and later spread to the central and southern parts of the state. Royal and wealthy families used these boxes to store gold jewelry and other valuables. This craftmanship was originated in the village of Nettur in Malabar, which is why it is popularly known as Nettur Petti.Â
The boxes are typically made from rosewood or teak and unique with its distinctive shapes and ornamental metal fittings. It usually comes in rectangular or square forms with internal compartments and a lid equipped with a locking system. The inner compartments are organized to accommodate various types of jewelry, such as chains, necklaces, rings, and earrings. Some boxes also feature secret compartments, functioning as traditional lockers for the valuables. The base of the box typically includes metal foot bushes on all four sides for stability. The most common shape that comes with a conical lid resembles a temple tower and traditional roofs of Kerala architecture. The box combines brilliant crafting techniques and artistic skills, making it both ornamental and functional. The design is inspired by geometric compositions following traditional architectural rules, and the handcrafted brass fittings enhance its appeal. Nettur boxes feature plain wooden surfaces with brass designs as well as a much colour full surface with painted motifs in the traditional mural painting style. These motifs often depict elements from nature, elephant patterns and floral designs. Luxuriously decorated and richly coloured, this traditional jewellery box is both a cherished gift item and an ornamental piece that effortlessly exudes royalty.Â
