Ramacham Vishari
Kerala is a state where conventional systems seamlessly blend with nature, influencing lifestyle choices, utility items, and ritual practices according to climatic and weather conditions. Among the many indigenous products, traditional hand fans using the herb-Ramacham (Vetiver) stand out for their utility and eco-friendliness.
To combat the sweltering Kerala summer, traditional hand fans were extensively used. These fans were crafted from palm leaves or other herbal plants, making them biodegradable and environmentally friendly. One notable example is the Ramacham Vishari, a hand fan made from the aromatic herb vetiver (known as ramacham in Malayalam). Vetiver not only serves as a natural coolant but also infuses the air with a pleasant fragrance.Â
Botanically known as Vetiveria Zizanioides, Ramacham’s grass and roots are prized for their potent medicinal properties. The plant is deeply embedded in Kerala’s daily life, providing multiple uses such as producing perfume oils, sleeping mats and natural scrub for body cleansing etc. Kerala has its unique version of alternative air conditioner- a device crafted from water, Ramacham roots, and an electric motor. This ingenious device not only provides a refreshingly cool breeze but also offers health benefits. Although modern electrical amenities now perform many of these functions more efficiently, the traditional products of Kerala, remains as luxurious ethnic items that offer eco-friendly alternatives to contemporary conveniences.Â
