Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy Temple, Palakkad

The Panniyur Sri Varahamurthy Temple, located about 15 kms south of Kuttipuram Town in Palakkad, is an incomplete temple. Legend has it that Perunthachan, the legendary architect and master carpenter, was asked to build a temple that would match its counterparts in heaven. Lord Indra, the king of the gods, was worried about the prospective splendour of the earthly temple, and interrupted Perunthachan’s efforts daily, ensuring that the temple never got completed. You can still see those unfinished structures inside the temple complex.

The presiding deity is Lord Varahamurthy – the third reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. Panniyur Varahamurthy Temple is believed to be the first temple in Kerala consecrated by Sage Parasurama, around 4000 years ago.
