Pookode Handloom Village has a long history of weaving. It once had more than 250 weavers working in home-based weaving centres. During the 16th and 17th centuries, there was a tradition of weaving fabrics for temples and royal palaces. This handloom village was one among them, although its exact year of establishment is unknown. The villagers had a practice of weaving dhotis and shirts. Dyed threads were used for both handloom and machine weaving, as there was no means for dyeing threads in the village. But now, this handloom village is on the verge of extinction with only two families involved in the handloom weaving industry.
