Kathakali, the classical art of Kerala, is an amalgamation of devotion, drama, dance, music, elaborate costumes and loud make-up.
It is an art form that takes the audience to the world of gods and demons, heroes and heroines, birds and beasts.
The Vesham or make-up is of five types - Pacha, Kathi, Thadi, Kari and Minukku. The grandeur of Kathakali is notably due to its décor, which includes huge ornamental headgear called kireetam, the kanchukam, an oversized jacket, and the long skirt worn over a thick padding of cushions.
