Kottangal Padayani

Kottangal Devi Temple in Pathanamthitta is popular for its annual Padayani festival. Knowns as Kottangal Padayani, the festival begins with 'Choottu Vaipu' ceremony on the Bharani asterism in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December-January).

The festival is celebrated by the people of two Karas (regions) - Kottangal and Kulathoor. Kolam's performance begins on the 3rd day with Ganapathi Kolam, which represents the five elements. One of the important ritualistic functions of Padayani is the Adavi, which happens to be on the 5th and 6th days at Kottangal.
