Synagogue at Chennamangalam
The synagogue at Chennamangalam near Alwaye in the District of Ernakulam is one of the landmarks that remind visitors to Kerala about the Jewish settlers, who once formed an integral part of the local community. The video presents here is the Jewish Synagogue at Chennamangalam. Built in 1614 AD, the synagogue was recently restored to its original glory by Kerala State Archaeology Department with support from Kerala Tourism. The synagogue is a blend of traditional Kerala architecture as well as western. It houses a magnificent altar, displaying intricate artwork with interesting colour combinations. The synagogue has a high roof, the ceiling of which has a rectangular piece of brightly coloured artwork. A wooden balcony with beautifully carved balusters and railings; and another balcony, meant exclusively for women with a wooden spiral staircase leading to it are the other noticeable works of craftsmanship at the synagogue.
