Theyyam at Keezhathur Bhagavathy

The Theyyam festival held at Keezhathur Bhagavathy temple, a small village shrine in Kannur. It is one of those temples where Theyyam, the spectacular ritual art of Kerala, can be watched in all its natural grandeur.

Theyyam is performed to appease gods or heroic ancestors in ancient temples or ancestral homes. While performing, the artiste is believed to be the incarnate of God. The dance is an awe-inspiring one, with the folk elements very much visible in its costume, foot work and ritualistic vitality.
