Vadivukal or stances of the combatant in Kalaripayattu makes an exhaustive inventory of them, drawing inspiration from the postures, attitudes and stances of various animals as they adopt the fight or the flight mode of self-protection. Some of them are Simha vadivu (lion), Gaja vadivu (elephant), Ashwa vadivu (horse), Sarpa vadivu (snake), Varaaha vadivu (wild boar), Mayura vadivu (peacock), Marjaara vadivu (cat), Matsya vadivu (fish) and Kukkuda vadivu (cock).
