Velakali


Velakali is a martial dance form that is noted for its rhythmic stems and dynamic spirit. Men dressed in traditional attire perform this as part of temple festivals and rituals. Men wore traditional warriors’ headgear in vibrant red and holds swords and shields while performing.

Velakali is conducted annually at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram as part of the Painguni Festival. 101 male artists signifying 101 kauravas perform.  It glorifies the victory of justice over wrong, when the Kauravas run away, beating a retreat with the ‘ vela ottam’.
