In order to overcome the challenges like water shortage, faced by the paddy growers, the authorities worked on many possibilities to irrigate a large area of the district and Karappuzha Project was found to be the most feasible one.
The first goal was to construct an Earth Dam at Vazhavata in Vythiri Taluk. This irrigation project was aimed at constructing a storage reservoir and a canal system to irrigate a total ayacut of 5221 hectares. Karappuzha project division, an independent division, started functioning in 1977. The partial commissioning of the project took place in 1985. Plans are on to revise the project and enlarge its scope and reach.
