Here begins another inspiring history of Wayanad. Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of the Kottayam dynasty fought the British rule fiercely. The king was forced to take refuge in the wilderness of Wayanad from where he planned a different strategy to drive the British away from the land. He organised the Kurichiya tribes in the area and their guerrilla warfare caused many difficulties and destruction to the British force. In 1805, the British could finally win the war against the King’s forces, but they could not catch him alive because he killed himself in the interiors of the forest.
